It’s the school holidays, and whether you’re going overseas or heading to the coast for a weekend away, it’s important to check your home security. Simple adjustments such as moving your emergency key, or asking your neighbours to collect your post, can deter opportunist thieves. So, before you board that plane or pack the car, ensure your home is secure – don’t be an easy target.

Amalgamated Locksmiths has put together a checklist to make sure your home is safe even when you’re not there.

Your home security checklist:

Check windows and doors

Check and double check your doors and windows are closed and locked. For extra security consider using rods in the tracks of sliding doors and windows to further deter thieves.

Secure home safe codes & keys

Don’t make the mistake of writing down your home safe combination. And if you have a key? Store it off-site so your valuables are locked away safely while you’re on holidays.

Stay off social media

Oversharing on public social platforms allows people to compile data about you and where you live. You may be tempted to post your hotel view, or the endless summer days but hold off until you get back so you’re not advertising that no one is home.

Talk to your neighbours

Your neighbours are your biggest asset when it comes to home security. They’re likely to see any suspicious behaviour. So, speak to your neighbour before you go on holidays and ask them to keep an eye on your property.

Install motion sensors

Motion sensors are an affordable way to deter people from your property. If a burglar is attempting to enter your property, a motion sensor will trigger a light and hopefully fluster the intruder.

Tidy your garden for home security

Establish a clear line of sight from your house to the road. Cutting back trees and shrubs will help achieve this. If an intruder has nowhere to hide, it will deter them from attempting to break into your property.

Consider installing smart home devices

Smart door locks can detect unusual activity, smart lighting can be programmed to turn on at night, and smart cameras will alert you of any movements within the home. This can all be done from your smart phone, giving you peace of mind while you’re on holidays.
