As part of our series on suburban crime rates so far, we have looked at Abbotsford, Collingwood, Fitzroy, South Melbourne and Northcote. Today, we turn our gaze to North Melbourne.
As ever, we have taken our statistics from the state’s official crime watch source, the Crime Statistics Agency of Victoria (CSA), corroborated by information sourced from insurer RACV.
The Top 5 Offences in North Melbourne are:
- Theft (591 cases)
- Breaches of court orders (253 cases)
- Burglary and Break ins ( 203 cases)
- Property Damage (167 cases)
- Assault (152 cases)
Crimes Against the Person
Three of the four major crimes against the person (assault, stalking and negligence causing harm) have gone down between 2016 and 2017. There were six fewer stalking cases reported, down to 36, and 34 fewer assault and assault-related offences, down to 154 after the spike in 2016. Dangerous and negligent acts remain under 10 per year, going from nine in 2016 to eight this year. In the fourth category, robbery, there has been a small increase from 28 reported offences to 31.
Property-Related Offences
There were 34 more cases reported of break-ins and burglary in this last year (from March 2016 to March 2017) than the year before, from 169 to 203. This follows the increasing trend in burglary for North Melbourne since 2014. Similarly for theft, the trend has been for break-ins and burglary to increase each year since 2014, the lowest year since the CSA took over the publication of the crime statistics (March 2012 to March 2013).
Arson cases have remained fairly consistent at below 10 cases per year.
Property damage also is hovering around 170 cases, where it has sat for the past three years.
